Sustainable forestry

Forests are the primary source of raw materials for UPM. Applying the principles of sustainable forest management is therefore a critical priority for our company. We promote good forest management practices and ensure that we have full control over the origin of our wood.

Recovered paper is an important raw material in paper making. Fresh fibre is nevertheless essential to the paper cycle, as wood fibre can only be recycled a finite number of times before it becomes too short and weak for paper making.

Origin of wood and certifications

You will find UPM’s Origin of Wood Information Statements for each of our mills in UPM Certificate Finder. These statements confirm our commitment and compliance to the European Union Timber Regulation (EUTR).

We have a comprehensive range of FSC® and PEFC™ certified products available to you. Forest certification is an excellent tool for promoting sustainable forestry. In 2015, out of all fibre used in UPM’s production units 85% was certified.

By 2030, we aim to only use certified fibre in our production. We also strive to maintain 100% continuous coverage of our chains of custody.
