We are committed to tackling climate change by addressing emissions at every level.
This means reducing the footprint of our own operations, shifting to renewables, and working closely with partners across our supply chain.

By acting throughout the value chain, our actions create real impact, drives progress across the industry, and strengthen the resilience of paper for generations to come.

Why emission reductions matter

The most significant cause of climate change is the burning of fossil fuels, which emits greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This leads to global warming, a gradual rise in overall temperature, which impacts the living conditions of our planet. Since global warming is primarily caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide and other gases, it is key to climate change mitigation that we limit our emissions. At UPM Communication Papers, we are focusing on emission reduction in all three scopes; our own production, purchased energy and our emissions in our supply chain.

Climate Action Roadmap

Our Climate Action Roadmap focuses on reducing our carbon emissions across the paper value chain and ultimately achieving a lower carbon footprint for our paper, further helping our customers to meet their own climate targets. This happens by shifting to lower emission solutions at our mills, investments and increased use of renewable energy, and driving continuous improvement across our supply chain.

Our actions

Reducing emissions in our own operations by transitioning away from fossil fuels

  • Increasing use of biomass to reduce the fossil share
  • Increased efficiency, e.g. through Combined Heat and Power plants
  • Electrification of steam production and drying sections
  • Phase out of coal and peat
  • Getting ready for future fuels like hydrogen

Investing in and using more renewable energy in our production

  • Wind PPA investments - increased reliability in renewable electricity delivery is essential
  • Investing in power-to-heat boilers for electrical steam production

Collaborating with suppliers and stakeholders to reduce emissions in the supply chain

  • Increase share of intermodal transportation
  • Pre- and post-haulage with electric trucks where possible
  • Evaluate options on biogenic fuels
  • UPM -30by30 program

The average Scope 1 & 2 carbon footprint of our papers from European mills will be reduced by more than 70% by 2030

In 2025, we have set a new ambitious climate target, underlining our commitment to driving the value of paper.

We are reducing our GHG emissions from our own operations and purchased energy at European mills, to an average of ≤100kgCO2e / tonne of paper by 2030.

This means that by 2030, we will reduce fossil greenhouse gas emissions from our own operations and purchased energy (scope 1+2) by more than 70% per tonne of paper. With estimated reductions in Scope 3 included, the average paper carbon footprint will be reduced by nearly 50%.

Significant fossil emission reductions by 2030

Our key actions include investing and ramping up the use of renewable energy, optimization in production and adapting new technologies.

EMAS

The EU Eco-Managment and Audit Scheme (EMAS) is a complementary management tool for organizations already certified with ISO 14001, allowing them to further report on and improve their environmental performance. EMAS provides credibility, transparency, and effective management of environmental risks and opportunities.
