An integral part of our work: Safety. Mission Zero

Steve McNamara

Director, Safety and Sustainability, UPM Communication Papers

“Safety. Mission Zero” is our next step or maybe even a paradigm shift in our safety thinking at UPM Communication Papers. It’s about looking forward instead of backwards and focusing on positive aspects in safety.

What does this mean for us? People are at the heart of our business and taking care of our people is a top priority for us. Keeping our employees, contractors and visitors safe is embedded in our daily activities. This has become particularly manifest under the current circumstances since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, but the crisis has not changed what we do.

Since 2011, we have reduced the number of lost time accidents across all our locations by 84%. But we don’t stop here. Each single accident is one too many, so the journey continues: Together we can turn our vision into reality, and we all work towards our common goal.

Our Frontrunners in Safety

If we want to focus on the things that go right, it is important to celebrate success and share the good practices. Each year, UPM awards the Best Improver in Safety and members of the Safety Frontrunner Club among its production units. The awards recognise excellent developments in safety. The 2020 winners of the safety awards – some of UPM Communication Papers’ sites are also among the list – were presented a few weeks ago by UPM’s President and CEO Jussi Pesonen and OHS Director Merja Partio

17 units were awarded as members of the Frontrunner Club. This recognition goes to production units with an excellent safety performance throughout the year. Six of the Frontrunner Club members are UPM Communication Papers unitsKymiJokilaaksoNordland Papier, NorServiceHürth and RCP and Wood Sourcing Germany.

Congratulations to the winners! Let’s keep up the good work - it’s not Mission Impossible, it’s Mission Zero!
