Setting the Course for Sustainable Logistics: UPM’s New Rail Cargo Concept

UPM Communication Papers has launched a new rail logistics concept in partnership with Rail Cargo Group (RCG). This strategic shift marks a major milestone in our logistics operations in southern Germany, enhancing reliability, efficiency, and sustainability.

A new direction in rail logistics

Rail Cargo Group is one of Europe's leading rail logistics companies and offers environmentally friendly freight transport and logistics solutions. In its German subsidiary, we have found a partner with an impressive track record in the pan-European market.

The partnership with RCG enables us to optimize transport flows to and from our mills, using block trains instead of single-wagon transport. The result: faster transit times, improved predictability, and greater resilience in our supply chain.

RCG provides end-to-end logistics services, including daily coordination of inbound raw materials and outbound paper shipments, railcar management, and specialized load securing. Local rail operators, such as Augsburger Localbahn, support the network by handling first and last-mile connections.

Every wagon counts – for the environment, efficiency, and reliable deliveries

By switching to block train transport, UPM has significantly improved delivery reliability and reduced transit times. Customers benefit from more predictable shipments and better visibility into their supply chains.

The system also enhances operational efficiency. With optimized transport routes and consistent wagon availability, loading and unloading processes are smoother and more coordinated. This contributes to a more resilient logistics network that can adapt to changing demands.

Importantly, the shift to rail supports UPM Communication Papers’ environmental goals. Each block train replaces up to 60 truck journeys, cutting CO₂ emissions and reducing pressure on road infrastructure. A single round trip between North Rhine-Westphalia and Augsburg saves over 60 tonnes of CO₂ compared to road transport.

We don't think in problems, we think in solutions – and that's what defines our collaboration.

Looking Ahead

UPM plans to expand the rail concept to include more inbound flows, additional storage locations, and international imports from countries like France and Italy. The collaboration with RCG also includes the use of hybrid locomotives, further supporting our decarbonization efforts.

This initiative is in line with our Climate Action roadmap and -30by30 target to reduce Scope 3 emissions by 30% by 2030. It is achieved through innovation and strong partnerships across the supply chain. Together, we’re setting the course for a more sustainable future.
