UPM Caledonian, located in Irvine, North Ayrshire, has been in operation since 1989 and is one of the most efficient paper mills of its type in the world. The addition of a combined heat and power plant (CHP), using biomass as a renewable fuel source, is a natural progression for the site which is now able to produce all of its heat requirements and just over half of its electricity needs.

All water used onsite is municipal mains potable water. The water used in the papermaking process undergoes several recycling routes before being discharged to the effluent system. Caledonian has a primary effluent treatment plant for solids removal which is then combusted in the CHP boiler with the excess water effluent being discharged to the municipal secondary effluent treatment plant for further processing. Caledonian continues to focus on water consumption and effluent discharge in all effluent parameters (volume, solids, COD and BOD), which will contribute towards the achievement of UPMs 2030 environmental targets.
UPM Caledonian Paper was the first UPM paper mill in Europe to be accredited under ISO 45001, the new global standard for Occupational Health and Safety early in 2019. ISO 45001 replaces the management standard OHSAS18001 and provides an improved framework to reduce workplace risks and ensure a safe and healthy environment for employees and visitors. The new standard puts increased emphasis on the participation of workers and interested parties and Caledonian values this contribution. All workers are encouraged to report safety and environmental concerns and observations and to engage in the risk assessment process as they approach their work.
