“I feel lucky to work for UPM. We have a strong emphasis on sustainable products and we manufacture our products with great energy efficiency."
Nordland Papier has its own effluent treatment plant, where wastewater generated from the production processes is cleaned before it is discharged into the Ems river. Since 2018 an ultrafiltration plant for the recovery of wastewater is in operation, i. e. that a partial stream of the wastewater is reused in production to replace fresh water. Fresh water is drawn from deep wells, paying attention to sustainable groundwater regeneration. At the moment all of the electricity required by the mill is purchased from the grid. The steam required for paper drying is generated by combustion of natural gas in the mill’s own heating plant.

The construction of a mill’s own Combined-Heat-Power (CHP) plant starts in Q3 2020 and is planned to go in operation from Q3 2022 onwards. The highly efficient 80 MW gas fired power plant improves the environmental performance and will cover most of the mill’s heat demand while enabling active participation in the increasingly volatile German electricity markets.
