KELAG Energie & Wärme GmbH has been operating the district heating network in Laakirchen since 1990. Every year, around 22 million kilowatt hours of heat for radiators and hot water are supplied to customers. "With our pre-supplier UPM, we are able to provide our customers with environmentally friendly district heating on a long-term and secure basis," says Adolf Melcher, Managing Director of KELAG Energie & Wärme GmbH. "UPM is not only our heat provider, but also a major district heating customer. We provide the UPM buildings with district heating. Furthermore, many of our housing and industrial companies’ buildings, as well as the paper-making school are connected to our network. The city of Laakirchen itself is also one of our major heat customers in Laakirchen," Melcher explains.

In addition to the paper mill and sawmill, subsidiaries and associated companies at Steyrermühl act in matters of sustainability:
Together with our partner Heinzel Paper we operate a waste disposal.
The heat generated during paper production is used in district heating. The company responsible for this, the EEVG, also supplies Cinerit, a substance for soil stabilization on large construction sites such as retention basins for flood protection.
Steyrermühl Logistik & Recycling GmbH deals with waste paper and logistics. It collects, sorts, sells, processes or reuses it: Paper can be reused up to seven times - this is why a proportion of waste paper is also used in paper production.
